The Survivor Filter Pro: A Product Review

survivor filter pro 3Clean and safe drinking water is an absolute necessity.  That fact alone should be putting clean water at the top of your priority list.  Whether the shit has hit the fan, you find yourself stuck out in the wilderness, or even if your municipal water supply has become unsafe to drink you need to be able to filter whatever water is available to you.  Boiling the water before consumption may not always be an option or possibility so having a way to filter it is crucial.  Today I bring to you a new product review on the Survivor Filter Pro – a product that I think EVERYONE needs to have on hand in their home, EDC pack or Bug out Bag.

I’ve tried other survival filters in the past.  They worked very well but one important factor that many of them didn’t meet was the fact that they weren’t designed or recommended for use in freshwater sources.  In my opinion, that pretty much defeated the purpose.  Not to worry though, the Survivor Filter Pro is here to save the day!

When fully assembled including the plastic cup/cover, the Survivor Filter Pro is very compact measuring at approximately 3.3″ wide x 6.5″ high x  1.9″ thick and weighs a mere 8oz.  It’s still a bit bulkier than a standard straw type filter but the functionality and idea behind this product doesn’t even make me think twice about using it as my primary water filter.  This product is made of high strength food grade abs plastic.  At first I was a bit worried about the pump shaft breaking due to cold temperatures but it performed perfectly.  I also added some excessive force to really test it out and it didn’t even bend.  Treat the product with care and it should last you a lifetime.  This product can filter water by up to 0.01 microns, making it one of the best products on the market today.  Here is something else I think you’ll like… It can filter up to 264 gallons (1000 water bottles) of water!  It’s recommended that the human body should have at least half a gallon (2 liters) of water per day.  In a survival situation one can almost guarantee that you wouldn’t be drinking that much so even if you were able to drink one quarter (1/4) of a gallon per day, it would take almost 2.9 years before you need to either clean or replace the filters!  The filter also comes with a nice draw string pouch so you can store the main filter and hoses all together for easy access.  Included as an extra with the Survivor Filter Pro were two collapsible canteens which are perfect for carrying extra water with you.  Their small filter, the Survivor Filter also screws directly on to the canteens as well as various water bottles but we’ll go into those products a little later in a different review.  One last thing I want to mention is the great price point on the Survival Filter Pro.  Priced at under $70 USD, it’s an affordable and extremely reliable water filter for everyone whether you’re a prepper, survivalist or outdoor enthusiast.

The plastic cup/cover which comes with the filter is definitely very useful.  Yes, you guessed it, you can put all your filtered water into it and use it as a drinking cup.  If possible though, you should put it on a flat rock or other surface to help keep it upright.  I found the bottom of the cup to be a bit too narrow which caused it to tip over a few times.  Mind you, the ground I sat it on wasn’t very level either.  Since it’s hard to pump the filter and hold the cup at the same time I suggest that you just wedge the cup into the dirt or put it between two rocks or larger sticks to help hold it upright.  On another note just remember that the bigger the product, the more room it will take up in your bug out bag.  This slight inconvenience isn’t something that would change my mind about ordering another one of these again in the future.  In the end it’s all about survival, not slight inconveniences.

The filters and hose:survivor filter pro 5

Keep in mind that this is the ONLY personal water filter that has an Ultra Filter, Cotton Filter and a Particle Filter!  The water outlet hose is approximately 12″ and the inlet hose is approximately 39″ in length which is perfect for those hard to reach areas.  On the end of the hose that sits in the water you can attach two foam floats which can slide up and down the length of the hose.  This allows you set how close to the bottom the first filter will sit.  Whether you’re filling up the cup that came with the filter, a glass or other container, I found the hose to be long enough as is.  The unit has an excellent flow rate of approximately 500ml (17 ounces) per minute.  It took me a bit less than 30 seconds to fill up the cup/cover which was great.

First Filter:  At the end of the hose (which sits in the water source) you need to manually attach a cotton pre-filter.  This product also comes with an extra one (for two in total) which is nice.  This filter is responsible for removing large particles and sediment from the incoming water.

Second Filter:  The carbon filter is the second line of defense.  It’s purpose is to remove heavy metals, residual pesticides, odors and organic materials from the water.  This filter screws into the bottom of the third filter called the ultra filter.

Third Filter:  The ultra filter provides the third line of defense to remove the smaller particles which may not have been trapped or absorbed by the cotton pre-filter and the carbon filter.

survivor filter pro 1Assembly & Disassembly:

It’s recommended that after every use you should take apart the entire filter, rinse off the filters with clean water if possible and let them dry overnight.  If that’s not possible (depending on your situation) at least take the unit apart, drain and shake out as much water from the filters as you can.  If you are in an area where the temperatures are below freezing make sure you wrap up unit and components so they are not exposed to the elements to keep them from freezing as this can and probably will damage the filters.  Instructions for cleaning the product are included so I won’t bother to put them all here.

The company:survivor filter pro 2

First off, all I have to say is WOW.  Good customer service is hard to come by these.  Wherever I’ve gone I’ve never felt as if I was an important customer or consumer.  I’m used to either never hearing back from emails that I send out or getting half answers to questions that I’ve had regarding products.  Not with these guys.  The team at Survivor Filter truly believe in and stand behind their product.  Exceptional customer service is an understatement.  Before doing this review I had many questions and every single one of them were answered in a timely fashion and in a great amount of detail.   They also back all of their products so if anything ever goes wrong just give them a call and they be more than happy to help you out.  Purchasing this product is one decision that you won’t regret.  If you don’t believe me, contact them yourself and you’ll see exactly what I mean about true honest to good customer service!
